Travel Photo Diary – L’Open Bus Tour Paris

This year, it was time to hand over my iPad to Zee (although let’s face it, she’s been the boss of it, and the one who was most clued up on how it all worked, since I first got it when she was just two years old πŸ˜€).

Shawn bought me an iPad Pro in January – with a Smart Keyboard (which has proven to be invaluable for writing blog posts) and an Apple Pencil, because he’s cute like that. πŸ˜‰ So the time had come to delete the social media apps, and anything else unnecessary for a little one, and officially hand over Ol’ Faithful.

A few days ago, Zee came to sit next to me with it, and started showing me some old pics, and telling me all the stories she remembered from when they were taken. It’s amazing how much, and how well, they remember.

There was a whole bunch of pics from a day out in Paris. This was from our first holiday there, when she was three years old, yet she told me stuff about many of the pics, as if she had been there just yesterday. πŸ™‚

I realized that I’d never shared these pics here, so I thought a photo diary was in order, of our day on L’Open Bus Tour.

We chose to start our tour at The Louvre, and our last stop was at the gorgeous twinkling lights of the Eiffel Tower. Our adventurous three year old explorer obviously wanted to sit on the top, open level of the bus. This meant that we sat on the top, open level of the bus. Cold? What cold? πŸ˜€

Some highlights of the bus tour:

* There are 4 lines, 50 stops, and more than 100 sights
* Hop-on, hop-off as you wish
* Audio guide available in 10 languages
* An audio channel especially for kids, with stories and tales of Paris

All the pics were taken on the iPad, so some of them (especially those taken at night) aren’t perfect. They’re incredibly special to me though, and highlight one of the most wonderful days spent in our favourite city in the world. ❀

Rand Show 2017

The last time Shawn and I went to the Rand Show was in 2004. It was a few months after we got married, and a few years before we had a Zee of our own. This year we decided to take our little person to the show.

There’s actually so much for kids to do there, and Zee had a great time. And so did we. πŸ™‚

Science and Technology 

We ended up spending quite a bit of time in the Science and Tech hall. Zee had lots of fun with the other little people at the Nutty Scientists stand. They sat listening to Professor Fun, screaming loudly when she asked them to, and eagerly volunteering to be part of the fun experiments. Then they’d run to their tables with the other professors, to try the experiments in smaller groups. 

Inside The Colours Of The Stars dome, everyone lies on their backs, to watch a projection show about the stars. Zee said “it was so cool!”

Danone Frozen Bar

The Danone Frozen Bar was a huge hit with the kids – I say this, because of the excited giggles and shrieks, which made it hard for adults to hear themselves think.. haha!

There’s a huge snow globe, a snow slope, a snow patch, an ice castle, and sparkly fro-yo… the giggles and shrieks were inevitable. 

An SABC TV crew also arrived in there a few minutes after we did, and one of the ladies asked if they could interview Zee about Danone Frozen Bar. She was happy to do it. So look out world… a celebrity is born! πŸ˜€

Shawn – with Zee as assistant, and me as cheerleader – made a really cool decoupage tray during a class by Tersia at Bee Artsy. He asked me to choose the colour and pattern, so of course it’s minimalistic with a Paris touch, because that’s how I roll.

The Filthy Moustache

Before we could do anything else, we had to feed our bellies. We ended up at the food truck which had grabbed my attention on our way in that morning, because of its name – The Filthy Moustache!

And man were we happy with our choice! Their food (even though it may not look fabulous in my pic) is so YUMMY!! We tried the Manometer burger, and a hot dog, and neither disappointed. 

I don’t know if I should say it… alright, I’m going to… the Manometer is one of THE best burgers I’ve eaten! Shawn says it took him back to an outstanding burger we ate in Germany a few years ago (can you tell, from the fond food memories, that we love good food? πŸ˜‹), and I agree.

The Rand Show makes for a great day out with the family. It ends on Sunday evening (23 April), which means you can still catch it if you haven’t yet. 

Recipe | Banana Muffins

Those who know me, know I tend to shy away from baking anything which doesn’t start out with a mix in a box. πŸ™ˆ Baking from scratch scares me – once it’s in the oven, that’s it… it’s all too final for me. Cooking is different, you can always open the pot, taste, and add ingredientsΒ if need be.

This time though, I decided to be brave and try a recipe I came across on fellow mommy blogger Mom Of Two Little Girls twitter account.

She had posted a link to a quick and simple recipe on My Mommy Style, and seeing as I had over ripe bananas to spare, Zee and I gave it a try… and… success! They’re oh so yummy, and Zee has declared me “best chef ever!” Although – my child is all about positive reinforcement, and crowns me “best chef ever” after just about every meal I make. πŸ˜€

The muffins were also the perfect addition to our mommy daughter tea party. πŸ™‚

And now, the recipe (which even a novice baker like myself cannot get wrong):

Prep: 10 min | Bake: 20 min | Total: 30 min


β€’ 1 & 1/2 cups all purpose flour

β€’ 1 teaspoon baking powder

β€’ 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

β€’ 1/2 teaspoon salt

β€’ 3 large bananas, mashed (I used 4 small bananas)

β€’ 3/4 cup sugar

β€’ 1 egg

β€’ 1 teaspoon vanilla essence

β€’ 1/3 cup butter, melted


1. Preheat oven to 175Β°C / 350Β°F.

2. Coat muffin pan with nonstick spray, or use paper liners.

3. Sift together the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, and salt; set aside.

4. Combine bananas, sugar, egg, vanilla essence, and melted butter in a bowl. Fold in flour mixture and mix until dry ingredients are just combined. Do not over mix. Scoop batter into the muffin tin.

5. Bake in preheated oven for 15-20 minutes (I left them in the full 20 minutes).
