Meet the Mommy [Week 5] – Namreen from Life and Times of the Fireflies

A while back I was thinking about how all the moms I know are different in many ways – be it their parenting style, or whether they go to work, stay at home, or work from home. Some have one little person, while others have three or four. Some of our babies began their journey inside us learning the sound of our heartbeat, whilst some began in another only to meet us later and hold our hearts forever. Whatever the differences in how we became moms, how we parent… Being a mom, plus ALL that comes with it, is what we all have in common.

And that’s how I came up with the idea for this feature – a short interview (short, because for moms, the time struggle is real yo!) with regular moms like you and I. Here we’ll get to “meet” different mommies, and find out a little about them.

This week we meet mommy blogger, Namreen. Whether it’s posts about mom life, or personal style, I always enjoy reading what Namreen writes. I’m so happy to feature her here today. 🙂

1. Please tell us a little – or a lot (we like details) – about yourself.

Strangely enough, I struggled to answer this question the most. I have many roles and functions… I’m a stay at home mom with two teens and an almost 8 year old, I’ve been a wife for the past 16 years; a sister for forever, and I’m a full time daughter and occasional blogger/writer. I used to love baking, but right now it just feels like a chore amongst the other chores… But I feel like those things don’t properly define who I am; and who I am is constantly evolving as I journey through life. At various times I identified more strongly with one of the above mentioned roles; but now I feel like I can proudly say that I’m just Namreen, journeying through life with my kids, husband, siblings and parents by my side ❤️. I think I’m very traditional in my values and family is everything!

2. What’s the one thing you find most challenging about being a working / stay at home mom?

I’m a stay at home mom, and in the beginning the hardest part for me was forging my own identity. I didn’t have a career or identity other than being a mom. Right now though, I think the hardest part is finding a balance between being my own person, while still effectively fulfilling my duties and responsibilities. And generally feeling like I’m falling short and not able to give each child the undivided attention that they need. The afternoons are particularly nightmarish and sometimes I feel like there’s always one person getting the short end of the stick. I guess I sometimes feel that time is short and I worry that I’m not the kind of mom I want to be.

3. We all know there are challenging moments – moments which call for chocolate, or wine (or both), to soothe those mommy nerves… Forgetting all that though, what is your absolute favourite thing about being a mom?

Oh gosh… there’s so many! But my absolute favourite thing would be if we’ve discovered a new life lesson together, or if I was part of them evolving as a person. I also particularly love the moments when we’re all piled up on the bed or engaging in some fun family activity. We can be proper fools sometimes and I love that we can laugh at each other and with each other.

4. From the experience you’ve gained since becoming a parent, what is a pretty cool piece of advice you would give to other moms?

This is a tough one because it’s a topic I’m quite passionate about so it’s hard to choose just one thing! I guess if I should choose, then one thing then I’d say that kids require most is parents who are present…and not just physically, but emotionally connected to them. And sometimes that task gets harder as they get older, but that’s when they need it most!

5. Share with us one of the funniest moments you’ve had since becoming a mom.

Parenting is no joke!!! LOL…Jokes! I can’t think of anything that stands out as particularly funny. I do, however, find it amusing that people ALWAYS ask me if I’m my children’s sister. In the shopping mall or the ER; I ALWAYS get asked it and I kind of like it!

Oh how wonderful to read about Namreen. I’ve teens so it’s great to read about others with teens. I adore your answer, Namreen, about being present. So so important and not always easy to do – particularly with social media pressures. And can I just say, you look amazing – so young and so so beautiful. Your family are gorgeous too xx #FamilyFun
