Food, fun, family – GFWS2017 [Photo Diary + YouTube Video]

Just over a week ago we attended the Good Food & Wine Show at the Ticketpro Dome. It was our first time at the show, and it was mostly due to Zee’s enthusiasm to attend – she’s been on my case about GFWS2017 ever since seeing the first ad on tv earlier this year. We love good food, and we love watching shows like My Kitchen Rules and Masterchef together as a family, so the little person figured it was a given that we’d attend the foodie event of the year. 😊

We went on Saturday, 29 July (it ran from Friday morning to Sunday evening), and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We ate ALL the food; tasted and bought the most amazing fudge, chocolate, and piri-piri sauces; watched brilliant chefs in action, and took selfies with some of them too (because if you don’t selfie, were you even there? 😂). Oh, and there was some pretty good music too.

They cook, and they sing 😊@davidhiggschef @jsomethingmusic #MKRSA #GFWS2017 @goodfoodsa @mnettv

I thought a photo diary post would be best to remember our lovely day at the show, and to remind us why we definitely need to attend again next year.

**WIN** tickets to SPLASH! The Water Circus at Silverstar Casino

SPLASH! The Water Circus is set to enthrall audiences at Silverstar Casino on its first visit to South Africa, direct from Russia.

Launching on 19 August, the show will be at Silverstar Casino until 17 September, before heading off on a nationwide tour until January 2018.

SPLASH! The Water Circus

SPLASH! The Water Circus is a circus for the modern-age, presenting a variety of all circus genres, but with a unique, visual twist. The traditional acts look completely different as they are presented in – or above – a 12-metre diameter pool of water. Accompanying this is a dazzling lighting and laser show which perfectly displays the impressive body manipulation and contortion feats amongst a series of water fountains.

You will gasp as you watch traditional aerial circus acts such as the spectacular Silks all take place above water. Added to the already impressive list of circus acts is the Brazilian Espana family performing their daredevil Wheel of Death and The Russian Swing.

SPLASH! The Water Circus

In addition to all the circus acts which we’re accustomed to seeing, the show also has a full team of synchronized swimmers who add to the magic of the performance. Their disciplined and well trained displays are one of the reasons why the show is considered to be so unique.

This circus is totally free of animals and showcases the extreme talent and capabilities of the human body in an action-packed show presented around the custom-built pool ensuring a truly memorable audience experience.

SPLASH! The Water Circus

A few interesting facts about SPLASH! The Water Circus:

~ Since then, the creative team has continually developed new acts and shows which captivate families across the world.

~ Over the past 19 years, the ‘Circus on Water’ team has toured Russia, Spain, France, Italy, Turkey, Israel, Oman, Lithuania, UAE and China.

SPLASH! The Water Circus

The importance details:

~ Performances are on Thursdays and Fridays at 20h00, Saturdays at 11h00, 15h00 and 19h00, and Sundays at 11h00 and 15h00.

Review | Zapper at GFWS2017

The Good Food & Wine Show in Johannesburg came to an end last night. This was the first year we attended, and now that we have, we definitely won't miss any again. The show is incredible – SO much good food, wine, and fun! There's loads to share, and that's all coming up in my next post. Today though I want to tell you about an app which made eating (which we did A LOT of) and buying stuff at GFWS2017 so much easier, an app which Shawn has declared his new favourite. 🙂

Zapper provides a simple and satisfying user experience that is convenient and valuable.

When you find a Zapper QR Code on your bill, scan it with Zapper and confirm the amount to be paid. Whether you're paying for a meal in a restaurant, a bill at home, or shopping online, the experience is the same. Quick. Simple. Secure.

Zapper

I'd recently downloaded the Zapper app on my phone. I'd used it once, and while impressed by the convenience, stopping by their stand at GFWS2017 on Saturday definitely helped us understand how it works better. We chatted to the very friendly Ana, Sasha, and Robyn. The ladies explained the features of the app, and showed me on my smartphone how I could search for vouchers that nearby restaurants have on offer. Robyn also quickly sent me a list via WhatsApp of all vendors making use of Zapper at the show.

After the serious stuff, we got to play the dice game. Zee volunteered to roll the dice for us (she looked the proper Zapper brand ambassador too in her blue cap 😊). Then we scanned the QR code on which it landed to see if we'd won. Shawn and I won a R20 voucher each. Zee saved the best roll for my cousin, who was pretty chuffed with his R40 voucher win. Of course I let him know that I was very jealous.

Zapper

We were ravenous by then, so The Filthy Moustache was the first place we decided to use Zapper that day. I mean, I can't even imagine anywhere else being our first food stop. We'd tried their food earlier this year, and we were hooked immediately. Also, ever since I told Shawn they were going to be at the show, he could hardly wait!

Zapper

We didn't even have to look at the menu, we were like, "Manometer and plain gourmet dog please!" My cousin and his wife went for the Manometer as well, after hearing us speak lovingly and longingly about the glorious, messy food we were about to eat.

I think that The Filthy Moustache is incapable of disappointing – the food was just as delicious as we remembered! And just as messy – if you're doing it right, you really do get quite filthy digging in to those burgers and hot dogs. Sorry, GOURMET burgers and hot dogs.

Zapper

Next we headed to a stand close by for cannoli. Only when I transferred the pics to the laptop did I realize we didn't get the stand name. Seems even the camera could only focus on all the yummy pastries. The outside is crispy, and the filling was sweetened ricotta cheese with chocolate chips or fruit. I hadn't tried the tube-shaped Italian pastry before, and I thought they were really yum. Sweetened ricotta – oh my! My cousin and his wife say these weren't quite as good as the cannoli they'd eaten at a little Italian place elsewhere in Joburg. Guess they'll have to take us next time we see them, and I'll give you a better-informed verdict then.

We also discovered what may be the best piri-piri (/peri-peri) sauce ever! Delagoa Bay's traditional piri-piri and their piri butter melt are just out of this world. One taste, and Shawn was more than happy to get out his phone and scan that QR code for a bottle of each. He was as impressed with how quick and simple Zapper made paying for things at the show, as he was with the spicy goodness we'd just tasted.

Shawn used the app again at the Smack! Republic stand, where he quenched his thirst with a Rooibos and honey draught beer. I don't know much about beer, but judging by the only pic we have of the cup, it must've been really good. 😋

We finally used our vouchers toward the end of the day. Mine went on food (the most delicious sushi from Sushi Boat, obvs), and Shawn used his when he bought me Marco Pierre White's book, White Heat 25. ❤️

We had an awesome day at the Good Food & Wine Show, and we cannot wait for the next one! And it was great making payments quickly and securely with the Zapper app. It's definitely one everyone needs to have on their phones.
