**WIN** tickets to the Good Food & Wine Show (Johannesburg) #GFWS2017

The world’s first celebrity chef Marco Pierre White, and South Africa’s first Michelin-starred chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen will be turning up the heat as the international headliners at this year’s 2017 Good Food & Wine Show. South Africa’s largest culinary event first opened in Cape Town on Friday 2 June until Sunday 4 June at the CTICC, and is now making its way to Johannesburg at the Ticketpro Dome from Friday 28 July until Sunday 30 July, wrapping up at the Durban Exhibition Centre from Friday 27 until Sunday 29 October.

The latest foodie trends will be dished up and South African foodies will have the chance to interact with the line-up of exciting food personalities, including headline chef, restaurateur and foodie Joao Da Fonseca, popularly known as J’Something, who will share his secret recipes by preparing a tasty feast for the shows. As an added bonus, J’Something will take to the stage to perform his music as this multi-talented personality is also the leading man of popular band Mi Casa.

Jenny Morris, Lentswe Bhengu, Sarah Graham, Neill Anthony and Sherwyn Weaich are also on this year’s Good Food & Wine menu, in addition to headline sommeliers Lloyd Jusa (Saxon Hotel), Gregory Mutambe (12 Apostles Hotel) – who will all share some of their fine wine knowledge with show attendees.

Over 60 000 visitors attended the three Good Food & Wine Shows in 2016, and this year’s footfall is expected to increase with chefs like White and Van der Westhuizen on the bill of fare, a huge T Rex dinosaur cake and a wide selection of vendors and interactive installations showcasing food and fare from around the globe. The floor will be divided into nine specific exhibition areas for attendees to explore: Market, Street Food, Gourmet, Baking, Kids, Wellness, Lifestyle, Wine, Beer and Alcohol.
 
North meets South

Trailblazing British chef Marco Pierre White has been dubbed the world’s first celebrity chef. White was 33 when he was awarded three Michelin stars, and still holds the title as the first British chef and the youngest chef ever to earn this honour. He featured as a star judge and guest on MasterChef Australia where he was called ‘the godfather of modern cooking’.

White has also trained famous chefs like Mario Batali, Gordon Ramsay, Curtis Stone and Shannon Bennett. After retiring from the kitchen in 1999 Marco became a restaurateur and has published several books, including the best-selling cookbook/autobiography White Heat.

“I was last in South Africa in 2014 so I am excited to be returning in 2017 to headline the Good Food & Wine Show for the first time,” says White. “As much as I will be sharing my culinary journey with the visitors attending the shows, I am also looking forward to transferring knowledge and experience to some of the top local talent in South Africa and partaking in the diverse food culture this beautiful country has to offer.”

Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen is South Africa’s first Michelin star chef, and owner of JAN Restaurant in Nice on the French Riviera. Also a gifted photographer, food stylist, writer, entrepreneur and businessman, Van der Westhuizen’s humble Middelburg origins set the foundation for his Boereseun and French twist cooking style on Boerekos.

All visitors to this year’s show will get a chance to watch White and Van der Westhuizen in action daily, free of charge, at the Chefs’ Open Theatre. In addition, the two chefs will be cooking up a storm at the Chefs’ Table: smaller, more intimate ticketed events where people will have the chance to meet the chefs, taste their food and sample some of South Africa’s top wines. 

“We want to engage with visitors and involve every one of their senses,” says Maria Chieppa, Managing Director of Fiera Milano Exhibitions Africa. “We have used taste, touch, smell, sight and sound to tell a 360° story about food and wine. It’s a great occasion for food lovers, families and professionals to enjoy food and wine at all levels.”

This year, the show hosts nine theatres, of which seven are free of extra charge for entry, serving up even more value for those attending. The Good Food & Wine Show theatres include: Eat Well/Live Well, Wine Theatre, Baking Theatre, Cake Deco Lab, Chefs’ Table, Chefs’ Open Theatre, Cooking with Chefs, the Kids Deco Lab and the SCASA Barista Championships – a new partnership with the Speciality Coffee Association of Southern Africa (SCASA) partnership and the show to host the 2017 Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal Regional Barista Championships.
 
Children under 12 attend free, and Fridays are free for pensioners. Tickets are available online at www.goodfoodandwineshow.co.za and Ticketpro for Johannesburg.

We ate sushi at Willoughby & Co (V&A)… and now we have to move to Cape Town!

Last Monday, we were still in Cape Town 😀, with a day to go before we had to head back home. In case you hadn’t worked it out already (from my previous blog post or my Instagram account), we heart Cape Town. It’s our fave city in SA, and this last stay there was way too short. *sigh*

On Monday evening we had gone in search of supper, and found a long queue of people waiting outside one of the restaurants in V&A Waterfront. I didn’t even look at the name of the place, because I wasn’t keen on a long wait. We took a walk one floor up, and a little while later, Shawn (who was quite curious about what it was everyone was queuing up for) looked down and saw that the line was a little shorter, so we decided to give it a shot. Zee looked down too, spotted sushi (she is her mother’s child) and went, “ooh sushi! Are we going there?” 😂

The clearly popular restaurant turned out to be Willoughby & Co.

Since opening in 1996 Willoughby & Co has offered its guests a full Japanese culinary experience. Head Asian chef, Sam, and his dedicated team have continued to create new and exciting dishes. Through these creations thousands of patrons have been introduced to fusion style Japanese cuisine, for which Willoughby & Co has become world renowned.

We only waited about twenty minutes – while sipping on red wine – before being seated. This is us looking pretty pleased about our relatively short wait in the queue.

We let our waiter, Francis know that we hadn’t eaten there before, and asked what he recommended. Francis, who is charming and knows the menu well, quickly pointed out a popular dish on the menu – the 4×4 (4 pieces rainbow reloaded, and 4 pieces spicy creamy rock shrimp roll). He told us that the 4×4 was the reason there’s always a long queue of poeople everyday. Zee didn’t need any help, she told Francis she’d have her “usual” – salmon roses. ☺️

The food was fresh and delicious, AND we didn’t have to wait forever for it – how brilliant?The 4×4 was an excellent pick. Thank you Francis! The pics don’t really do the food justice. The sushi pieces are generously sized, and the flavours are amazing. I knew I’d love the rock shrimp roll (and I was right, it was amazing), but the rainbow roll really blew my mind. I’d never eaten such a delectable rainbow roll before! And Zee says her salmon roses were “reeeeeally YUMMY!”

We stuck with sushi for our main, and dug into this sumptuous prawn tempura roll. We were pretty much rendered speechless on the first bite. It was that good! Whatever secret spices and sauces they’re using, it’s working! Every bite is an experience. Seriously, the sushi is so well made, I was a little mad that we’d decided to have dessert before our meal, as I would have gladly ordered and wolfed down more had I not been so full! 😋

It’s been exactly a week since we dined there, and I still can’t get over how yum everything was. So now, obvs, we have to move to Cape Town, and explore the rest of the menu. 😁

Rand Show 2017

Rand Show - Danone

The last time Shawn and I went to the Rand Show was in 2004. It was a few months after we got married, and a few years before we had a Zee of our own. This year we decided to take our little person to the show.

There’s actually so much for kids to do there, and Zee had a great time. And so did we. 🙂

Science and Technology 

We ended up spending quite a bit of time in the Science and Tech hall. Zee had lots of fun with the other little people at the Nutty Scientists stand. They sat listening to Professor Fun, screaming loudly when she asked them to, and eagerly volunteering to be part of the fun experiments. Then they’d run to their tables with the other professors, to try the experiments in smaller groups. 

Inside The Colours Of The Stars dome, everyone lies on their backs, to watch a projection show about the stars. Zee said “it was so cool!”

Danone Frozen Bar

The Danone Frozen Bar was a huge hit with the kids – I say this, because of the excited giggles and shrieks, which made it hard for adults to hear themselves think.. haha!

There’s a huge snow globe, a snow slope, a snow patch, an ice castle, and sparkly fro-yo… the giggles and shrieks were inevitable. 

An SABC TV crew also arrived in there a few minutes after we did, and one of the ladies asked if they could interview Zee about Danone Frozen Bar. She was happy to do it. So look out world… a celebrity is born! 😀

Shawn – with Zee as assistant, and me as cheerleader – made a really cool decoupage tray during a class by Tersia at Bee Artsy. He asked me to choose the colour and pattern, so of course it’s minimalistic with a Paris touch, because that’s how I roll.

The Filthy Moustache

Before we could do anything else, we had to feed our bellies. We ended up at the food truck which had grabbed my attention on our way in that morning, because of its name – The Filthy Moustache!

And man were we happy with our choice! Their food (even though it may not look fabulous in my pic) is so YUMMY!! We tried the Manometer burger, and a hot dog, and neither disappointed. 

I don’t know if I should say it… alright, I’m going to… the Manometer is one of THE best burgers I’ve eaten! Shawn says it took him back to an outstanding burger we ate in Germany a few years ago (can you tell, from the fond food memories, that we love good food? 😋), and I agree.
